Artist Statement
My work speaks to a reevaluation of the world which has been previously perceived in our lives. I want to express the multiple ways in which a person can be conscious of their own surroundings by making the viewer confront something which may be heavy-handed or aggressive yet still enticing and approachable at the same time. My art is a form of freedom to explore positive and negative energies within the same experience. The subject of my sculptures focuses on taking aspects of the world around us which we are accustomed to seeing, such as light, color, or everyday objects, and using these familiar sights in a way which makes them disassociate with their original purpose. My pieces are designed to make the viewer question the uncomfortableness of what they are experiencing and reaccept that in a more favorable way. The goal of my art is to evoke a positive energy from overbearing or disarrayed surroundings. My most recent work has been discussing this theme by using color, shape, and light to overpower the viewer’s senses. My sculptures have large brightly colored geometric shapes paired with intense lighting or color to extenuate these forms. This overbearing display of sensory perceptions is paired with well-defined qualities of formal composition to bring structure to the piece. This then evokes a feeling of peacefulness to the chaos of the shape, line, and light which balances the positive and negative energies together. |
